I am having a hard night tonight. I am again having second thoughts about this job. Things are going good at the store. Sales are doing well and I like my staff, but I do not have enough of a staff. I am working 6 days a week and I am having a hard time keeping up this pace. I am scheduled something like 54 hours next week, 7 straight days, and I am ready to cry thinking about it. This afternoon I started to get the pain back in my leg (one of the herniated discs in my back is sitting on a nerve that runs down my leg, the sciatic, and the pain is concentrated in my lower leg) and I am getting scared that the pain epidurals may be wearing off. I am hoping it is just an errant pain and I took Advils, but the standing for as long as 12 hours a day doesn't help. If I need another round I am screwed, since my insurance doesn't kick in until Jan. 1st and they cost $1,600 each. My nightly pain medication costs $177 a month without insurance. Luckily the pharmacy matches Costco prices at $134.50. No more diamonds for me for a long while!
I am also getting nervous about the plane rides I have coming up. I have not been on a plane since I had the epidurals or the since my discs herniated, so I am fearful of the pressure changes on the plane.
I really thought that my year was turning around, but it seems not to be. Maybe I am just PMS'ing or just overly tired. Sleep seems to be evading me and I wish I had my mommy!
I think I need a good cry, so I shall have a go at that now.
Until next time...goodnight.

Oh Maureen, you poor thing! I hope things improve for you really soon!
You are working really long hours, you must be feeling pretty drained right now - both physically and emotionally.
As for your back pain, standing all day long will not help that at all! I had a really bad horse riding accident when I was 13 and really screwed up my back - I spent the week on my back and could not move at all - not even to eat or go to the toilet. I know how painful it can be - I still 16 years later have to be really careful what I do now, It is so easy to hurt my back all over again.
I can't believe how expensive your medication is!! That must really hurt too!
Have a good cry... hopefully you will feel a bit better after it.
Thinking of you...
:D
Thanks B.B. I guess I am just sore and tired and in need of sympathy and empathy! Isn't backpain horrible? But when I put it into perspective, it could be so much worse, there are so many others that have it much worse than I.
Dearest Maureen,
I'm so sorry about this situation. The cost of your meds is really astounding.
How overwhelming for you!
Trying to help: What does your boss say about the schedule? Is it a permanent expectation? Those are really unrealistic hours for anyone to have to stand on their feet.
Have you talked to your doctor about the airplane pressure? They might have suggestions.
The insurance issues in the US and the cost of meds sure doesn't help..
I'm so sorry.. I just wish I could make the pain go away.
Y,
Thanks for all your kindness. I think I will call the doctors office and make sure flying isn't an issue. A little late now, since I have my tickets and I am NOT missing the Bar Mitzvah.
As for work, I have to hire someone, which is easier said then done. For an economy in which everyone says there are no jobs, it seems that no one wants to work. People come in and want to work on their terms, only when they want and that doesn't work. My boss' solution is to hire someone. As the manager, I get to pick up all the crappy and left-over hours and shifts.
In so many ways, I have had a great, productive career in retail management over the years, but it is times like this that it sux! (I think I was extra p.o'd because I was supposed to go out for dinner Wed. night and I have to cover a shift instead of being off.)
MC!
I know you've been working many hours at the store and that you are tired, etc. I agree with the previous comment that you are great at what you do. You're going to do great things for that store!! LOL, that's why I came back to work for you again... You've got the support of the staff in terms of covering hours until someone awesome comes along to hire. =)
